Laboratory Technician
**"Serving consumers and agriculture by safeguarding the public, plants, animals and the environment through education and regulation."**
**The Idaho State Department of Agriculture is currently recruiting for a Laboratory Technician who will work in both the IFQAL and Feed & Fertilizer Labs located in Twin Falls.**
This position will require the incumbent to perform specialized and routine standardized chemical laboratory extractions and analyses on a variety of matrices. Duties involve working with toxic, volatile, corrosive chemicals, and carcinogenic substances.
Following are examples of duties performed for the current opening at the Idaho State Department of Agriculture:
**IFQAL Key Responsibilities:**
* Assist with sample flow and processing for chemical analysis under the IFQAL Quality System protocols.
* Log samples into the computer network, label and store samples following chain of custody SOP's. Track samples using the online tracking system.
* Prepare samples for analysis using liquid-liquid, solid phase and other methods of extraction following homogenization, grinding, or other methods of sample preparation. Prepare and analyze quality control samples, such as standards, controls, blanks and fortifications.
* Assist in target compound analysis, instrument maintenance and documentation of analytical results and QC.
* Assist in operation, maintenance, modification, troubleshooting and repairing analytical instrumentation (GC/MS, LC/MS, LC/MS/MS, as well as all other laboratory equipment). Assist in developing instrumental methods and chromatographic methods. Assists in performing method validations and method development for new capabilities.
* Perform preventative maintenance as required and other duties as assigned.
**Feed and Fertilizer Key Responsibilities:**
* Assist with sample flow, processing, and extractions of samples for chemical analysis under the Feed and Fertilizer Labs protocols.
* Assist with Sample Management: Log samples into Feed and Fertilizer Lab system, label/split/grind/store samples following the SOP's of the lab. Utilize quality control standards for all extractions and analysis.
* Sample Analysis: Conduct qualitative and quantitative chemical and physical analysis on samples. Prepare standard solutions for calibration and analyses; maintain the supply of standard solutions and reagents for all tests
* Sample Interpretation: Calculate testing results and determining result reliability.
* Perform quality control and data interpretation.
* Instrumentation: Operate, maintain, modify, troubleshoot, and repair analytical instrumentation (analytical balances, pH meters, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, Automated Solvent Extractor, Microwave digester, LECO Nitrogen Analyzer, ICP-OES)
* Perform preventative maintenance as required.
* Assist in method validations and method development for new capabilities.
* Assist in research for potential equipment upgrades.
**Minimum Qualifications:**_These qualifications are mandatory requirements._
* Good knowledge of laboratory terminology, equipment, materials, and procedures, and the fundamental laboratory methods relating to chemistry or biology.
* Experience performing standardized laboratory tests according to prescribed procedures; calculating and recording test results; and maintaining a clean, sterile, and safe laboratory environment.****
